Alpaca wool / fibre is highly prized and selective breeding by the ancient Incas succeeded in achieving extremely fine fibre products. The aim of modern breeding strategies is to reproduce the fineness and density of fleeces which are in demand worldwide.
Alpaca fibre is exceptionally fine, warm and lustrous, with a very soft feel although the fibre is extremely durable, second only in strength to silk and comes in 22 natural shades and colours. The number of scales on individual fibres is considerably reduced compared to sheep's wool and this helps to explain why wool allergic people do not have the same reaction to Alpaca.
