Numerous knitters have asked Jean to create a mermaid and here she is. With her pretty pink bodice, matching tiara and golden ringlets, who could resist this delightful doll? Mirabelle measures 33cm /13in from the tail fins to the top of her head, and the fins, tail, body and head are knitted in one piece. Knitted mermaids can be difficult to display due to the construction of the tails, but Jean designed a marvellous flexible tail, so that Mirabelle can sit on her knitted chair quite comfortably.

As well as Mirabelle’s knitted ‘stone’ chair Jean has included patterns for the other accessories, Pebbles, Seaweed and pink Seashells, for extra play value and all are easy to make. The seaweed starts with a few rows of garter stitch but instead of casting off you slide the stitches off the needle – and then… You will be surprised! Last but not least, Jean made a tiny friend for Mirabelle, Kevin, the Baby Crab. He only measures a sweet 6.5cm /2½in across the legs and body and is sure to become a much-loved character.

Jean’s mermaid cave setting for photography was enormous and had to be made in two parts – the base and the background. It’s all constructed from paper and cardboard stuck together with wallpaper paste and glue!

Donut Delights (20 pages)

We are always tickled pink by Jean’s ability to dream up amazing creations when she starts a new knitting project. However, it can be a little puzzling when she begins with one idea and then – eureka! – something else exciting happens. Which is exactly what took place with Donut Delights. Jean’s vision of a large knitted donut with a sweet little character nestling in the middle developed into an entire donut-themed extravaganza. All the designs are very versatile and can be knitted as keepsakes, for special occasions, for charity fundraising, or simply as charming ornaments.

There are Six lovable Dolls which fit snugly into the Donuts. They can be made for a wide variety of celebrations and Jean has provided instructions and suggestions for various greetings captions to personalise the Donuts for particular gifts.

Should you wish to add more commemorative details, these can be written on a cardboard circle glued to the centre of the donut base. For example, the Baby Girl and Boy Dolls are lovely mementoes for new born babies or toddler’s birthdays and similarly, the Chef, Party Girl and Clown can also record details of the event. Jemima Jane and friends (28 pages)

Jemima-Jane is dressed in the 19th century ‘rag doll’ tradition, with a variety of clothes and hair accessories. She measures a splendid 51cm (20in) in height. Knitted dressing-up dolls often end up looking somewhat peculiar because the designs begin with the doll itself then many layers of bulky clothing are added. Jean has cleverly got around this problem by knitting-in the dainty shoes and blouse bodice as parts of the doll.

In 1995 Jean designed The Tradesmen Clowns. One of the characters featured was Young Alf, the tradesmen’s apprentice.

With Alf Jean created a smaller Red Nose Gang figure, and it was inevitable Jean would conjure up some new friends for Alf and so in 1998 Young Alf's Pals arrived on the scene! Each character measures 39cm (15½in).
